The resolution supports its members in the use of the voluntary Facts Up Front labeling icons launched in January 2011 by the Food Marketing Institute and the Grocery Manufacturers Association. Facts Up Front is a nutrient-based labeling system that summarizes important information from the Nutrition Facts Panel in a simple and easy-to-use format on the front of food and beverage packages. The voluntary initiative was developed by major industry segments and is aligned with the US Food and Drug Administration and the US Department of Agriculture guidelines and regulations. In a resolution approved by the board, SFA noted that snack food companies are committed to the development and promotion of responsible private sector and public policy solutions and to providing consumers with the innovative products, tools and information needed to achieve and maintain a healthy diet. The resolution noted that snack food companies oppose mandatory efforts by the government to “designate foods as bad or good” and that they are “responding aggressively” to consumer preferences for healthier product choices and more nutritional information.
