T he Smithsonian’s first major exhibition on food history, “FOOD: Transforming the American Table 1950-2000,” co-sponsored by the Snack Food Association (SFA), explores some of the major changes in food and eating in postwar America. The 3,800-sq-ft exhibition, which includes a snack exhibit supported by SFA, has been open since Nov. 20 at the National Museum of American History. SFA President and CEO Jim McCarthy, Calista Doolin, daughter of Frito-Lay cofounder Elmer Doolin, and other representatives from the food industry attended the exhibit’s grand opening. The National Museum of American History features a display on snacks as part of its exhibit on postwar food. 24 Snack World February 2013 www.sfa.org “This exhibition, especially the section focusing on the history of snacks and highlighting the development of snack products, was especially appropriate as it opened just as SFA was concluding a year-long celebration of the association’s 75th anniversary,” Mr. McCarthy said. “SFA was delighted to support the project.” Among the topics on exhibition’s menu are changes in food production and processing, who cooks and why, where and when meals are consumed and what people know (or think they know) about what is good for them.
