Corn Snacks
A-maize-ing
Opportunities
Fritos, the largest-selling brand in corn chips, celebrated its
80th anniversary last year by setting a Guinness World Record
for Largest Fritos Chili Pie at the Texas State Fair. It used more
than 1,300 lb of Fritos, chili and cheese.
Frito-Lay North America, Inc., Plano, TX, markets the
Fritos, Fritos Scoops and Fritos Flavor Twists corn chips,
which according to SymphonyIRI Group sales data for
FDMx (food, drug and mass, excluding Wal-Mart), are all
Top 5 brands in this segment of the salty snack category.
Together, they account for nearly 72% of the corn chip
market in these channels.
Corn chips is, nevertheless, a fairly small part of the overall
salty snack market, and according to Mintel, corn snacks
represents only 6.6% of total 2012 US retail sales among the
salty snack categories measured for its report, making it the
second-smallest category behind meat snacks. “While small
compared to powerhouse
segments like potato
chips and tortilla chips,
corn snacks posted
substantial growth,
increasing dollar sales by 15.5% between 2010
and 201,” the Mintel report stated. “This is largely due to innovation, including continued proliferation of popped offerings,
following the success of Popchips.”
SWEET AND SALTY
San Francisco-based Popchips is an innovative popped-snack
company that launched a new kettle-corn variety this past
year to go along with tortilla and potato chip items. While it
didn’t break into the Top 20 corn snacks this past year, these
chips are making an impact across snacking. In fact, in its Feb.
