STATE OF THE INDUSTRY REPORT Corn Snacks A-maize-ing Opportunities Fritos, the largest-selling brand in corn chips, celebrated its 80th anniversary last year by setting a Guinness World Record for Largest Fritos Chili Pie at the Texas State Fair. It used more than 1,300 lb of Fritos, chili and cheese. Frito-Lay North America, Inc., Plano, TX, markets the Fritos, Fritos Scoops and Fritos Flavor Twists corn chips, which according to SymphonyIRI Group sales data for FDMx (food, drug and mass, excluding Wal-Mart), are all Top 5 brands in this segment of the salty snack category. Together, they account for nearly 72% of the corn chip market in these channels. Corn chips is, nevertheless, a fairly small part of the overall salty snack market, and according to Mintel, corn snacks represents only 6.6% of total 2012 US retail sales among the salty snack categories measured for its report, making it the second-smallest category behind meat snacks. “While small compared to powerhouse segments like potato chips and tortilla chips, corn snacks posted substantial growth, increasing dollar sales by 15.5% between 2010 and 201,” the Mintel report stated. “This is largely due to innovation, including continued proliferation of popped offerings, following the success of Popchips.” SWEET AND SALTY San Francisco-based Popchips is an innovative popped-snack company that launched a new kettle-corn variety this past year to go along with tortilla and potato chip items. While it didn’t break into the Top 20 corn snacks this past year, these chips are making an impact across snacking. In fact, in its Feb.
