Chairman Profile Mann Takes the Helm President of Pretzels, Inc. discusses his goals as the 2013 SFA chairman. BY BOB GATTY T he new chairman of the Snack Food Association credits his own professional growth and development, in large measure, to his more than 20 years of active participation in the association, and he hopes to encourage companies that are not yet members to join and benefit from that same experience. William (Chip) Mann II, president and co-owner, Pretzels, Inc., was installed as SFA’s new chairman during SNAXPO in March. He succeeds 2012 Chairman Scott W. Smith, president, Shearer’s Foods, Inc., Massillon, OH. “I didn’t have the opportunity to work in a corporate environment. I know what I know from Pretzels, Inc.,” Mr. Mann said during an interview at SNAXPO. “Every time I have the opportunity through the SFA to participate in seminars and educational opportunities, it’s personal growth that I can gather and put in my toolbox to make me a better leader, a better owner, better friend, better family man — all those things.” William (Chip) Mann II, president and coowner, Pretzels, Inc., was installed as SFA’s new chairman during SNAXPO 2013. Mr. Mann said he wants to build on the progress that has been made at SFA, continue to improve the association’s educational services and attract new members. ATTRACT NEW MEMBERS While he acknowledged that the industry continues to consolidate, Mr. Mann said that trend creates opportunities as new and exciting companies are springing up to fill voids in the marketplace — and many of those companies are not yet members of the SFA. The challenge is to attract those new businesses, which would bring new energy to the association. “There are a lot of talented start-up companies that are potential members,” he said. An important component of that effort, Mr. Mann said, is to continue to strengthen SFA’s educational opportunities for members. SFA’s new Snack School program is a good example, he added. This year’s program, to be held Oct. 13-15 at Saint Joseph’s University, Philadelphia, will focus on team building and problem solving and will be a terrific opportunity for company executives to increase their www.sfa.org May 2013 Snack World 51 http://www.sfa.org
