SFA responds to USDA’s
proposed regulation
regarding competitive food.

ontending that proposed regulation of
competitive foods sold
in public schools is too restrictive
and would make it “extremely
difficult” for many products
to qualify for the program, the
Snack Food Association is urging the federal government to
revise it.
The US Department of
Agriculture (USDA) published
its regulation earlier this year
and will consider comments
submitted by the public and
interested parties before making
them final.
In its comments to USDA
signed by SFA President
and CEO Jim McCarthy, the
association pointed out that
many companies in the snack
food industry have expended
considerable resources to
reformulate products to improve
their healthfulness while

on Legislative Summit
The annual Snack Food Association Legislative Summit will take
place July 16-18 in Washington, DC, giving SFA member company
executives an opportunity to meet with lawmakers and key staffers
regarding important legislative issues and developments affecting
their businesses and the snack food industry.
This year, SFA will join the Food Marketing Institute and the
Grocery Manufacturers Association for a joint conference, providing
a unified food industry front for discussions with members of the
US House of Representatives and Senate.
In addition, Legislative Summit attendees will be invited to
attend the annual Capitol Hill Hot Dog Lunch on July 17, a popular
event for lawmakers and staff members. Following the lunch,
SFA members will begin an afternoon of personal meetings with
lawmakers in their offices.
Key issues to be discussed will include independent contractor/
exempt employee status; school nutrition issues, including
competitive foods sales; GMO labeling; fair labor policy; and
commodity prices and biofuels.
The Legislative Summit will be headquartered at the Mandarin
Oriental Hotel in downtown Washington, DC. To register for the
summit, please contact SFA at (703) 836-4500 or visit www.sfa.org.
