Supplier’s Corner Get Involved I CANTRELL was approached a few weeks ago by a new member of the Snack Food Association (SFA) who asked me how he could get more out of his membership. My answer, of course, was that he should get active and take advantage of the many programs and services the association offers. But, that conversation made me think this might be a good time to review some of the many opportunities SFA provides, including the many educational and business events that are held every year. Legislative Summit (see the cover story on Page 17) — held in July — provided SFA members and snack food industry representatives a unique opportunity to meet members of Congress and other key government leaders to discuss issues important to our industry. This was — as always — a great opportunity to support our industry. Quality & Innovation Management Course (formerly Total Quality Management) — Sept. 9-13— is held in conjunction with Ohio State University. This five-day event introduces participants to principles of quality assurance for the snack industry and includes the sharing of best practices. Executive Leadership Forum (ELF) — Sept. 28 – Oct. 1 — is a retreat featuring a series of educational sessions focusing on the common challenges facing executives within SFA. Here, you can interact with other snack food executives and their spouses in an informal setting. The Snack School (formerly the Management Development Program) — Oct. 13-15 — is a three-day course designed to address the top issues and trends facing the snack food industry today. It features hands-on training that provides take-home results. For more information, see “Boot Camp” on Page 25. SNAXPO — March 1-4, 2014 — is SFA’s largest annual event. It’s a show where both manufacturers and suppliers get together to attend educational sessions, and attendees walk the exhibit floor, where equipment, services, and products are demonstrated. It’s a great opportunity to get to know our industry’s manufacturers and suppliers and learn more about the state of our industry. There also are a number of committees within the SFA, including SNAXPO, ELF and Management Workshop planning committees. We also have the Technical, Government Affairs and Scientific Review committees that need ongoing member participation. As I told that new SFA member, the only way to get the full benefit of being a member is by getting more involved.
