CHAIRMAN PROFILE Small Town Atmosphere, Big-Time Value 2014 Chairman Mark Singleton outlines his formula for success. BY BOB GATTY M ark Singleton, Texas born and raised, loves his chicken fried steak, sweet tea and waitresses who call you "honey." He is a small-town guy and a family man, and he loves the family that is the Snack Food Association (SFA). So Mr. Singleton, 54, of Rockwall, TX, the new SFA chairman, was especially honored when he was able to spend the better part of an hour interviewing former President George W. Bush, the guest of honor at the closing session of SNAXPO March 4 in Dallas. It was a singular moment for Mr. Singleton, whose day job is vice-president of sales and marketing at Rudolph Foods Co., Inc., Lima, OH, and who has wanted to be SFA chairman virtually from the day he first attended SNAXPO. Rudolph Foods just turned 58, Mr. Singleton noted during a break at SNAXPO, and the company has been involved in the association almost as long. Owners John Rudolph and his son, Rich, previously served as SFA chairs. "It's in our DNA," Mr. Rudolph said. "I'm from a small town, and I'm used to people helping each other," Mr. Singleton explained. "It's remarkable that SFA has become kind of a small town, even though we are scattered all over the country. Even as competitors, we support each other; there are SFA members who now are my very best friends. My hope is that this will always continue." Mr. Singleton brings a positive approach to his work, something he learned from his father, a longtime successful Dallas businessman who told him, "How many great things happen when you say no? Great things happen when you say yes." Twenty years ago, Mr. Singleton walked into SNAXPO for the first time. He was new at A.C. Horn & Co. At that time, he had worked a decade for the company. "I didn't know a single person, but Rich Rudolph and Jeff Almond of Heat and Control made me feel welcome." At SNAXPO this year, Mr. Almond reminded Mr. Singleton that he said back then someday he hoped to be SFA chairman. Now, that time has come. He likes to talk about the power of food bringing people together. "SFA is a shining example of friends succeeding together. If people have the right attitude of making everything a win-win, then it's wonderful," Mr. Singleton said. "I want to help unleash the power of food. We're in the 99-cent happy business, for gosh sakes." www.sfa.org Mark Singleton (right) accepts the SFA chairman's gavel from 2013 chairman William "Chip" Mann, Pretzels, Inc.
