SUPPLIER INSIGHT
CANTRELL
Building Relationships
I
n April, I participated in our annual Legislative Summit, and as I spent time with our various members during the event meetings, it dawned on me that the sole purpose of the Snack Food Association is to develop
relationships.
Whether it's the Legislative Summit, SNAXPO, Executive Leadership Forum, or any of the various committees or
meetings we participate in ... at the end of the day, this organization's purpose is to promote and improve relationships between our members and our customers.
After every SFA event or meeting I participate in, I leave the meeting with a renewed appreciation of how close
our members are and how deep our friendships run. We genuinely enjoy spending time with one another, which
allows us to share in the good times and support each other through the bad. Over the years we've been there for
each other and will continue to do so in the future.
When I first started participating in SFA events, I had a number of more senior members who went out of their
way to make me feel welcome and accepted. I think this early effort strongly contributed to my desire to increase
my level of participation within the organization and help where I could. I suspect all of us could name a number of
key individuals who played similar roles and mentored us during our early years in the association.
Although we all feel more comfortable being with the folks that we've known for years (and often only get to
see on an occasional basis), I thought we did a great job welcoming our newer members during this year's SNAXPO.
As part of the planning process for this event, we made a commitment to take the extra step in welcoming new
members and new exhibitors both during the show and the new members' reception. The feedback we received
from this event was overwhelmingly positive, and I believe we need to continue this type of effort as our association evolves.
The future success of our association depends on attracting and involving new members. Industry consolidation,
in combination with an increasingly more difficult business/regulatory environment, will mandate that we continue
to attract energetic, passionate and creative people to our organization.
Continuing to work with our familiar friends in combination with welcoming new members and participants is
the best way for us to ensure future success.
Sincerely,
David Cantrell
