BY BOB GATTY O n Jan. 6, Republicans took complete control of Congress for the first time in eight years, electing Rep. John Boehner (R-OH) as Speaker of the House and Sen. Mitch McConnell (R-KY) to lead the Senate. The Senate now has a 5446 Republican majority while the House GOP controls 246 of the 435 seats. Although Republicans now control both chambers of Congress, President Obama has indicated that he will use his vetoing power where necessary, especially when it comes to issues dealing with dismantling his monumental health care bill or immigration executive order. The change in party control in the Senate brings new leadership, including new GOP committee chairs, such as Sen. Pat Roberts (R-KS) who is not 14 Snack World February 2015 www.sfa.org only a friend of the snack food industry but also the new chairman of the Senate Agriculture Committee. Debbie Stabenow (D-MI) will go from chairman to ranking member. New senators elected to this committee include: Jodi Ernst (R-IA), Tom Tillis (R-NC), David Perdue (R-NC), and Ben Sasse (R-NE). Up for reconsideration by that panel this year will be the Child Nutrition and WIC Reauthorization Act. A debate can be expected over whether schools should be given more flexibility in implementing current nutrition standards, an issue that could impact snack makers who still participate in the National School Lunch Program.
