He believes that associate members represent a tremendous opportunity. "We need to get these folks under our umbrella since issues like labeling are universal. Food packaging and shipping issues affect the entire industry," Mr. Winkelman said. "The stronger the association is, the louder our voice will be." An accountant by training, Mr. Winkelman has been with Better Made for the past 21 years, working his way up the ranks before taking over as president of the company in 2011. He served on the association's board for two years before he officially began his year as chairman on March 22, taking the reins from Dan Morgan of BFY Holdings. Better Made was originally founded under the Cross and Peters name in 1930, and a member of the founding family's third generation still works for the company today. It has grown to use 60 million lb of potatoes each year for a variety of popular potato chip flavors. It also offers popcorn, pretzels, tortilla chips and pork rinds and plans to continue to diversify its product lines in the future. etter Made Snack Foods President Mark Winkelman was handed the gavel as the new chairman of the Snack Food Association just 36 hours after the organization unveiled its new identity as SNAC International during SNAXPO 2016 in Houston, TX. While Mr. Winkelman has a number of priorities for his year at the association's helm, first on the list is to fully implement this historic change and communicate with the membership about SNAC International's expanding role. "I think the SNAC International name and what it represents is so important. We realize that some nontraditional snack makers may shy away from the 'snack food' label while still embracing the growing snacking market," Mr. Winkelman said. "We want these companies to see the value of being a part of our association." Mr. Winkelman will also work to ensure that the association continues to provide value for both business and associate members. He believes the association has done a great job of making the snack industry's voice heard on critical policy issues in Washington, DC.
