LETTER FROM SFA MANN WINKELMAN SNAC International Leading the Way G MO labeling. Who would have thought it would have taken so long to accomplish something that seems like common sense to so many of us? I'm referring to the July 14th passage in the US House of Representatives of S. 764 (The Roberts-Stabenow Agreement). This law preempts the Vermont Labeling Law that was set to go into effect on July 1, 2016. The bill, which is expected to be signed by President Barack Obama, most likely by the time you read this, sets a national standard for food package labeling and preempts state labeling laws. My rather informal opening line alludes to the two-year-long effort to get this bill passed. Many organizations lent their efforts to getting this done, but SNAC International was clearly out front on this and was singled out for praise by the Coalition for Safe Affordable Food for its outsized contribution. SNAC International brought awareness to the issue and was a driving force within the halls of Congress to educate Senators and Representatives on the harms of the Vermont law. This could not have been done without the support of our business and associate members. Thank you, your efforts were tremendous! This is another on the long list of reasons to support SNAC International. (And any nonmembers that may be reading this, this is an example of why YOU want to be a SNAC International member.) Think it's time to rest on our laurels? No way! Sodium is the next issue to be addressed, and SNAC International is already engaged.
