C
onsumers continue to identify new occasions for snacks, blurring category lines
and establishing a broader definition of
what constitutes a snack. The other snacks category
includes a broad range of products that create endless possibilities for innovation.
"As busy as consumers are today, we are finding
they are eating fewer traditional meals and using
snacks as non-traditional meal replacements or
even as mini meals in between," said Rod Troni, chief
marketing and innovation officer, Snyder's-Lance,
Inc., Charlotte, NC. "We see this as an opportunity to
provide consumers with better snacks that fit their
needs and lifestyle."
Emerald Nuts, a subsidiary of Snyder's-Lance, offers
the "Breakfast on the Go" line featuring granola, nuts,
dried fruits and other mixes in a convenient resealable pouch that can be a meal replacement or used
as a topping for yogurt or cereal. It is available in
Berry Nut Blend, Breakfast Nut Blend, Coffee House
Blends: Caramel Macchiato, Maple & Brown Sugar
Oatmeal Nut Blend, and S'mores Nut Blend.
"Our diets are changing," said Scott Green,
vice-president of sales and marketing, Pretzels, Inc.,
Bluffton, IN. "If you define what snack foods are, they

include a much wider variety. They're not just salty
and savory. Before, chip companies were competing
with chip companies, and pretzel companies were
competing with other pretzel producers. Now snacking and our lifestyles have changed."
Snacking integrates the vegetable aisle, the deli
and cheese departments, and anything else that can
be reduced to small, individual servings. Clean category breaks are almost gone. Shoppers can choose
from a variety of chocolate-covered pretzels, potato
chips or popcorn. Products like low-sugar fruit snacks,
shelf-stable smoothies, trail mix and chocolate covered salty snacks have noted percent change.
"In the past, consumers went to the chocolate category to get their chocolate reward, but now, 62% of
total US consumers said they could get their chocolate
fix from other categories, and with the younger generation (18 to 44), 67% say the same," observed Sally
Lyons Wyatt, IRI executive vice-president and practice
leader, at SNAXPO 2017. "Chocolate-covered snacks
have had five years of growth, and it isn't stopping."
Pretzels dipped in chocolate or yogurt create a more
indulgent snacking option. These snacks appeal to
those consumers that crave sweet and savory; these
companies make products that deliver on both.
