"Using a low-fat pretzel as the vehicle for dark
chocolate, rich milk chocolate or other unique ingredients allows our customers to treat themselves
without going overboard," said Kevin Brick, senior
vice-president, marketing, Utz Quality Food, Inc.,
Hanover, PA. "Utz Butterfinger-dipped pretzels are an
indulgence that satisfies a craving without having an
entire candy bar."
Chocolate-covered items do particularly well
around the holidays in packages that allow for gifting
and sharing. "Herr's had great success with our new

holiday gift tub of chocolate covered sourdough
pretzels," said Bob Clark, vice-president marketing,
Herr Foods, Inc., Nottingham, PA.
Combining pretzels with other items like cheese, nuts
and candy has also fueled sales. Nutritional snack/trail
mix sales rose 4.6% to $924 million, according to IRI's
second quarter report of the retail sales performance of
key sectors in the US snacking market.

popularity of better-for-you trail mixes, mix-and-match
