Ample Alternatives
A
merican consumers' evolving eating patterns
continue to positively impact growth in
the salty snacks market. Enduring appeal
of flavorful, better-for-you (BFY) foods create exciting
opportunities for the industry.
Manufacturers are giving consumers what they want,
and the other snacks category enjoyed 4.8% growth
with more than $3 billion in sales, according to IRI for
the 52 weeks ending Feb. 19, 2017.
The perceived benefits of BFY options have produced a vital market for alternative snack ingredients.
Using pulses and alternative vegetables and grains like
chickpeas, sweet potatoes, kale and spinach are wildly
popular among consumers, according to the Packaged
Facts report "Snack Food Nutrition Trends: Pulses, Vegetables, and Grains in Salty Snacks and Crackers." Sales
of snacks with healthy inclusions are forecast to grow to
$1.2 billion in 2017.
Utz Quality Foods, Hanover, PA, expanded its portfolio of better-for-you snacks with their Good Health line
experimenting with rice, beans and potatoes. Including
vegetables in snacks can make health-conscious consumers feel better about snacking.
"Our Snikiddy 'Eat Your Veggies' chip line is similar
to tortillas yet provide more of a vegetable base," said
Kevin Brick, senior vice-president, marketing. "With
eight vegetables including carrots, sweet potatoes, kale,
spinach, broccoli, tomatoes, beets and shiitake mushrooms, these chips are irresistibly crispy and crunchy
and have great snack appeal."
The Good Health veggie products contain dried vegetables, enhanced with plant-base protein and vitamins
to expand overall nutrition in a snack. Increased development using organic ingredients and vegetables is a
good place for innovation.
"This brand brings the right nutritional ingredients
to the weekday diets with lower sodium, fat and sugar,
allowing for indulgences on the weekend," Mr. Brick said.
Snyder's-Lance, Inc., Charlotte, NC, Snack Factory
Veggie Sticks are baked with real vegetables as the first

ingredient. The Veggie Sticks are seasoned and come in
Snap Pea and Peas & Carrots varieties.
In addition to core products, Herr Foods, Nottingham, PA, rolled out BFY products under the company's
Good Natured Selects brand, including "Veg-ables" and
"Lentil Twists."
There's tremendous growth in the non-GMO, organic
and cleaner label brands, including Snak King's Whole
Earth brand. These drivers impact the snack industry as
much as the natural foods end of the market.
"We are growing different BFY products with more of
a gourmet appeal, like our rolled crunch sticks," said Joe
Papiri, vice-president, sales and marketing, Snak King,
City of Industry, CA. "These products are rice-based with
seeds, sesame, chia and flax. They are marketed as a
dipping stick paired perfectly with hummus and other
healthy, bean-based dips."
Noting present and future trends, the Packaged
Facts report predicts moderate to strong growth over
the next few years building on the increasing
healthier-for-you trends and the creation of unique
flavors and textures.
Bean-based snacks are expanding with launches
like Enlightened Roasted Broad Beans and Chick-APeas Baked Chickpeas. Other vegetable-based innovations came from Trader Joe's Just Beets, Brad's Raw
Broccoli Poppers and Dang Onion Chips, which are a
healthier version of onion ring-type snacks, according
to GlobalData.
"Quite a few vegetable-based snacks ended up in this
category in 2016, including Brami Lupini Beans," said
Tom Vierhile, innovation insights director, GlobalData.
"These beans look like giant lima beans and are a new
high-fiber, high-protein snack that is 'good for you.' "
Frito-Lay launched Sun Chips Veggie Harvest in two
new flavors: Farmhouse Ranch and Tomato Basil &
Cheese. "This launch expands the Sun Chips brand and
includes vegetables as ingredients," said Chris Kuechenmeister, vice-president, communications, Frito-Lay
North America, Plano, TX.
