Due to a blending of cultures
and a more transient
population, their appeal is
now growing around
the country.
Charlotte, NC- based Snyder's-Lance, Inc., expanded
the flavor profile of its Snyder's of Hanover Pretzel Pieces,
incorporating the new, trendy flavor of Sweet Chili Garlic
and a classic Buttermilk in sourdough hard pretzels. Snyder's of Hanover Pretzel Sandwiches now offer Classic
Hummus and Brick Oven Style Pizza flavors sandwiched
between two crunchy, bite-sized pretzel snaps.
"We also target our marketing efforts to keep our
brands relevant with great personalities," said Rod Troni,
chief marketing and innovation officer, Snyder's-Lance.
"Snyder's of Hanover, for example, introduced a new
marketing campaign in 2016 called 'Pretzels, baby!'
that uses a unique character to remind the brand's core
consumer that pretzels are a snack of substance and
deserving of a front of pantry spot."
Although innovation has been increasing, pretzels
remain under developed versus other snacks when it
comes to gluten-free, organic, ancient grains and other
health-related trends, according to Scott Carpenter,

Snyder's Snack Factory brand pretzel crisps are the
first flat-baked pretzel cracker and now available certified organic. The Snack Factory Pretzel Crisps Organic
Original and are also Non-GMO Project verified.
Utz's Good Health brand has taken things to a new
level with dedicated gluten-free and veggie pretzel
offerings. The veggie pretzels contain vegetable pieces with a sprinkling of Himalayan salt. "These build
on traditional pretzels with whole grain brown rice or
hearty vegetable inclusions," said Kevin Brick, senior
vice-president of marketing, Utz Quality Foods.
According to a Mintel 2016 report, 61% say it is difficult
to tell if a snack is healthy or not, and 82% of those polled
agree that the definition of healthy changes over time.
"Clean label is huge, and it's going to grow," Mr.
Green said. "That is one area where consumers are
educating themselves, along with organic products."
Clean-label ingredients, no matter how indulgent
the product, is almost always a consideration now,
according to Mr. Carpenter. "The growing on-the-go
lifestyles of today's consumers continue to drive demand for convenient foods and that create opportunities to provide innovative solutions," he said.
Consumers are pulled toward new packaging and the
appeal of convenient, re-sealable, small portion single-serve bags. "Snacks play a wide range of roles, from
meal supplement to indulgent treat, and determining the
packaging options that enhance those occasions is also
an important consideration," Mr. Carpenter said.
