A Century of Evolution

ust over a century after its founding, DSM honors
its heritage in its name. The company was originally established in 1902 by the Dutch government as the "Dutch State Mines" to mine coal reserves.
Diversification started in 1919 and about 50 years later,
DSM evolved into a chemical company after its last mining facility closed in 1973.
In the 1990s, innovation continued for DSM after it
sold its chemical activities and transformed into a company that facilitates the creation and growth of science
and technology for its customers. Today, DSM provides
solutions to nourish, protect and improve performance
across a variety of sectors from the automotive to the
snack industries.
A global company with multiple divisions, DSM helps
create better food that is affordable and accessible for
all. Its "Nutrition Cluster" houses DSM Nutritional Products and DSM Food Specialties, which manufactures
food enzymes, cultures, bio-preservation, taste and
health ingredients as well as salt and sugar reduction
solutions for packaged food manufacturers in the dairy,
bakery, beverages, brewing and savory industries. This
division serves the snack food industry with enzyme
solutions for biscuit, cracker and cookie makers, as well
as savory ingredients.
Food and beverage enzymes are natural proteins that
spur biochemical reactions and help snack manufacturers adjust to meet the demands of today's consumer.
DSM combines new taste profiles with scientific advancements to help its customers create products with
benefits such as heightened flavor, clean labels and
alternatives that reduce or replace ingredients like salt.

Leah Roach leads the sales department for DSM's
enzyme solutions for baking applications in South
Bend, IN. She helps customers solve enzyme application challenges.
"Often, our customers don't want to fundamentally
change their product because they know it is exactly
what the consumer wants," Ms. Roach said. "But they
do want to offer healthy alternatives, so they use our
enzymes to provide healthier snack ingredients."
Rooted in scientific research to improve nutrition,
DSM offers a variety of products that improve the taste
experience and allow food producers to avoid using
certain additives. These solutions also help improve
production efficiency. With these, DSM seeks to make
diets healthier and sustainably sourced.
"We continuously adjust our portfolios according to
the changing demands of the industry," Ms. Roach said.
"Whether it is our products or the services we offer, we
have our customer and the consumer in mind."
DSM has a team of application specialists and
sensory experts for all food segments to keep the
focus on innovation. DSM's research and development efforts span six networked application labs
with locations in the US, China and The Netherlands.
Its Food Innovation Center located in Parsippany, NJ,
helps customers test the latest developments and
add new value to their products. The facility features
pilot plants, research labs and sensory analysis facilities, all of which allow clients to process and analyze
product prototypes.
