Reflections and implications of a tragedy.

A
s SNAC International's new director of government affairs, I woke up in my house in
Alexandria, VA, June 14 with a huge sigh of
relief. SNAC's Legislative Summit would wrap up in a few
hours, and I was proud of the members who took their
voices to Capitol Hill. Then the texts start coming from
friends. Local school buses are being diverted from the
middle school. Roads are closed. I can hear a medical
chopper landing a mile away. There has been a shooting
at the local ball fields, and the targets were members
of Congress. I'm thinking of my family, my SNAC family
finishing meetings and my Capitol Hill family.
I email the SNAC members who are heading to the
Hill for one more round of meetings with news of the
shootings and warn that security will be tight. But most
important, be sure they express concern about the

morning's events. Despite what you may read, the Hill
is one big family, and this tragedy rattled everyone.
Whether Republican or Democrat, a bond is formed
while working in the trenches of Capitol Hill. Despite
policy differences, the end goal is the same for all -
members of Congress and staffers want to do what is
best for their constituents.
SNAC's Legislative Summit participants experienced
the tragic events of June 14 more personally than those
watching it unfold on their TVs at home. Many attendees met with a representative hours before he or she
headed to the ball field in Alexandria. The heartfelt concern that our participants felt for those who were on the
ball field and for their Congressional colleagues is at the
vital center of SNAC's Legislative Engagement program.
