SNAC ON THE HILL
wonderful relationships with their
senators and congressmen. Through
these relationships, they realize that
these public servants know and
care about them. As I shared with
SNAC's Board of Directors, a top
priority in building out our advocacy pillar is to approach legislative engagement in a holistic way.
The foundation is establishing a
personal relationship with elected
officials and educating them about
your business and your issues.
As we move forward from the
Legislative Summit, there are many
opportunities to engage and educate your members of Congress.
First, invite them to tour your company's plant or facility. Congressional recesses are not intended as
vacation time. They are a time for
members to return to their districts
and connect with their constituents. This is a perfect opportunity
to provide a tour and educate
officials on the complexities of your
business and the challenges facing
the snack industry.
Second, donate snacks to your
representative's DC and state offices.
Staffers take meetings every half
hour, so it is great brand exposure
with their visitors and creates a true
sense of ownership.
Third, plan now to attend our
next Legislative Summit, April
30-May 1, 2018, or let us help you
with your own "Day in DC." We
understand it may seem daunting, but SNAC will guide you every
step of the way. As an association,
we conduct meetings on the Hill
often, but a meeting is infinitely
more impactful with a constituent sharing personal stories and
concerns.
Fourth, consider joining SnackPAC, our federal political action
committee. SnackPAC is funded by
voluntary personal contributions
from SNAC members and helps to
elect federal candidates to office
who understand, support and
advocate the many issues facing

SNAC's Jessica Hixson and Rep. Robert Aderholt (R-AL) enjoy the annual Hot Dog Day
lunch, a popular event SNAC International co-sponsors each summer. Rep. Aderholt

the snack industry. This is an easy
way to ensure your voice is heard
in Capitol Hill. To date, SnackPAC
has supported House Speaker
Paul Ryan (R-WI), House Majority Leader Kevin McCarthy (R-CA)
and House Agriculture Committee
Chair Mike Conaway (R-TX), among
others. Several Legislative Summit
participants were also able to enjoy coffee with Rep. David Rouzer

(R- NC), Rep. Glenn Thompson (RPA) and Rep. Marcia Fudge (D-OH).
There is no disputing that politics
in Washington, DC, is more divisive
than ever. However, the majority
who work on the Hill truly care
about one another and want to
make a difference for their constituents. I encourage you to work with
SNAC to promote the best interests
of the snack industry.
