Snack manufacturers are on-trend when producing new snack chips using fruits and vegetables for
a grain-free snack or combinations of grain ingredients and vegetables to produce BFY alternatives
such as Sea Cliff, NY-based Vegan Rob's new,
bright red Beet Chips. According to Innova Market
Insights, chips made with beans and lentils saw
new product launches increase 67% from 2017-18.
BFY Brands, Inc., Liberty, NY, introduced
PopCorners Flourish Veggie Crisps. They are airpopped, lightly salted and made with real veggies
like kale, brussels sprouts, beans and beets.
"Crisps are everywhere this year. They have a
great mouthfeel, and they are salty or sweet, crispy,
dippable and perceived as healthier than a chip,"
Ms. Nielsen said. "Some producers have even

leveraged the current interest trend of mission-based
brands to stand out to consumers with similar values."
Chicago-based Mozaics Organic Popped Veggie
and Potato Chips blend organic peas with organic
rice and potato flour delivering less calories and fat
yet more protein and fiber per serving. This snack is
"mission-driven" as Mozaics supports The Chicago
Mosaic School, the first and only premier non-forprofit mosaic art school in North America.
"Plant protein sources like chickpeas and peas are
entering the snacking scene. Consumers' expanding
palates are now seeking a wide variety of beans and
lentils in snacks, as well as wheat alternatives through
single-source heritage grains," Mr. Johnson said.
BFY Brands' PopCorners portfolio responded
to the appeal for high-protein snacks and created
PopCorners Flex Protein Crisps. These crisps combine soybean and cassava delivering 10 g plantbased protein, available in bold flavors like Buffalo
and Barbecue.
Boardman, OR-based Calbee North America's
Honestly Veggie Popper Duos is a baked, extruded
vegetable snack with 4 g plant protein per serving
and no artificial additives. Combining salsa and yellow cheddar produces the Zesty Queso flavor profile.
Consumers are looking for real nutrition and to
satisfy hunger, and protein does both. "Protein is one
of the biggest drivers for BFY snacks," Ms. Nielsen
said. And salty snacks made with plant-based protein bases are set to carry the load.
