Consumer cravings for
plant-based protein has promoted double-digit growth
(19%) in this category, according to IRI's snacking
survey, which also noted that
45 million US consumers diet
each year as a part of their
food and beverage habits.
Nuts and seeds support popular diets calling for foods with
low sugar, low carbs, high
protein and healthy fats.
"Nuts and nut butters are partially fueled by
the keto diet as a good snack choice," said Kara
Nielsen, vice-president, trends and marketing, CCD
Innovation.
Pili Pushers, a brand from GTCL Pte Ltd,
Singapore, come in sprouted form flavored with
ginger and turmeric. Karma, Dublin, CA, introduced
Wrapped Cashews, billed as extra healthful because
they are produced with the skin on, adding fiber.
Other brands are competing for the "health halo."
Justin's, Boulder, CO, launched Organic Nut Butter
Covered Nuts available in two varieties, Almond
Butter Covered Almonds and Cashew Butter
Covered Cashews. Each contain 2 to 3 g plantbased protein per serving, and they are Non-GMO
Project verified and gluten-free.
"New snacks made from popped lotus seeds like
those sold under the Hopapops brand offer protein and fiber in a spongy, airy snack, nutrients not
normally found in puffed snacks," said Tom Vierhile,

Hopapops Sweet Heat Popped Lotus Seeds are
high in fiber and protein and low in calories and fat.
While Mintel's "2018 Nuts & Seeds" report found
that salty flavors were consumer favorites, some
brands are tapping into other flavor profiles.
Flavor Shots, a new line from Frito-Lay, Plano, TX,
a subsidiary of PepsiCo, recently introduced Doritos
Nacho Cheese Nuts featuring an intense taste and
crunch. Pickle flavors have reappeared this year in
this category. Camden, NJ-based Campbell Snacks'
Emerald brand introduced Dill Pickle Cashews.
Nuts and seeds available in single-serve containers also appeal to busy consumers of all ages.
Packages that provide on-the-go convenience in a
portable pouch that fits into pocket, purse or cup
holder engage snackers who find nuts and seeds too
difficult to transport using older packaging formats.
