11% with almost $1.8 billion in sales in the US snack
market for the 52 weeks ending June 16, 2019, according to IRI.
"Like chips, cheese curls are driven by indulgent flavors,
and hot flavors are a big hit right now," said Bob Clark,
vice-president, marketing, Herr Foods, Inc., Nottingham, PA.
Herr Foods fired up its cheese curls with spicy flavors
and savory cheese. Buffalo Blue Cheese Curls satisfy
cravings for hot wings while Herr's Jalapeño Poppers
Cheese Curls serve a touch of jalapeño pepper on a
cheesy base.
"The novelty ball format in the cheese puff category has
seen considerable growth. Wise Foods responded and
re-introduced Cheez Doodles, Cheese Balls and Jalapeño
Poppers," said Kevin Foltz, director of consumer content,
Wise Foods, Berwick, PA.
Rotating flavors or limited-time offers tied to seasons,
holidays, movies or special events create "pop-up" occasions in which producers can craft a unique dining experience to engage consumers and promote brands.
Herr Foods co-branded with Stubb's BBQ sauce
and introduced Stubb's Sticky Sweet cheese curls and
BBQ chips. Plano-TX based Frito-Lay's Double Cheddar
Cheetos Eggs joined Caramel Sweetos on Cheetos'
Easter line-up.
"We always strive to connect with consumers in new
ways," said Jared Johnson, vice-president of insights, analytics and category management, Frito-Lay, a subsidiary
of PepsiCo.
Cotton Tails and Snow Balls Cheese Snacks from Utz
Quality Foods, Hanover, PA, grew 41.4% and 39.6% respectively, according to IRI. These numbers underscore
the importance of creating fun experiences to keep customers engaged.
"Utz Quality Foods monitors what consumers are eating
and how they are eating snacks across a multitude of formats," said Kevin Brick, senior vice-president, marketing,
Utz Quality Foods. "These insights influence our portfolio
by way of innovation and new products or promotionally,
which drives consumer excitement."
