Meat snacks persist as one of the most robust sectors

great run. They have leveraged their protein content," said

leader, IRI. "Meat snacks are conveniently available in portable bars, sticks, chips or clusters, and they don't need
refrigeration."
Meat snacks deliver on the most preferred snack attributes by providing a natural, "real food" option that fulfills
a variety of snacking needs and occasions. With few
carbs or sugar, they also support consumer diet requirements and deliver on several health claims like no additives or preservatives. And they're gluten-free.
"The category is strong because people who like meat
will continue to buy meat snacks that deliver protein,
whole ingredients and unique flavors and formats," said
Jared Koerten, industry manager, food and nutrition,
Euromonitor International.
Premiumization of meat snacks has broadened consumer demographics to include active, health-conscious
adults and parents looking for nutritional snacks for kids,
according to the FONA International's "International Meat
Snacks: Accelerated Opportunity - 2018 Trends" report.
In 2013, only 6% of meat snacks were purchased by
teens, but in 2017 this number jumped to 30%, according to the FONA report. A recent snack that targets even
younger consumers is Charleston, SC-based The New
Primal's Snack Mates. Made from mildly spiced beef or
turkey, they are described as "the first paleo-friendly meat
sticks for kids."
"Other unique products include biltong, a meat snack
from South Africa that offers a cleaner label, fewer preservatives and a slightly different format. More like a stick
than a bar, this dried meat protein supports the paleo
diet," said Tom Vierhile, vice-president of strategic insights, North America, Innova Market Insights.
