Fruit-based chips surpassed chocolate-covered snacks
and yogurt-coated snacks within the other snacks category. The apple chips segment posted almost $26 million

n dollar sales with a 23.9% increase for the quarter endiing
ng June 14, 2020, according to IRI's quarterly report of
retail sales for the US snack market.
Apple chips deliver fiber and vitamin C, along with a
chip-like crunch. With concerns about health amid the
COVID-19 pandemic, there is white space for snack
choices that support a healthy immune system.
"There's been an uptick in products containing vitamin
C, and there's potential growth in this area," said Tom
Vierhile, vice president, strategic insights, North America,
Innova Market Insights.
Plano, Texas-based Frito-Lay's Bare Foods Apple Chips
posted more than $15 million in sales, growing 24.4%, according to IRI. The brand offers a variety of all-natural baked
fruit and vegetable chips. Flavor variations are available on
different fruit bases, such as Cinnamon Apple and Chocolate
Coconut and recently launched a new pineapple flavor.
Berwick, Pa.-based Wise Snacks' Salted Plantain Chips
are a vegetable chip which is gluten-free, kosher, free of
perservatives with no added sugar.
While FMI - The Food Industry Association, found that
97% of consumers are trying to eat more fresh fruits and
vegetables in its 2019 "Power of Produce" report, there
is less focus on fresh foods than before the pandemic as
concerns about food contamination persist. Packaged
snacks are not likely to be tainted, so some consumers
may look to fruit chips as a way to safely incorporate fruits
and vegetables into their diets.
Healthier snacks for children also are trending, according to Packaged Facts' "US Food Market Outlook 2020"
report updated in June. Products such as fruit chips and
