of polyphenols of any other whole grain product tested. Food containing polyphenols is perceived to be
functional containing antioxidants and other healthy
attributes.
Campbell Snacks, Camden, NJ, launched Snyder's
of Hanover Multi-Grain pretzels this year. Available in
Honey Wheat and Garden Vegetable, these braided
twists combine the flavor of real vegetables with a pretzel crunch.
"The primary driver for our brands across all categories is that we provide real food with real snacking moments for our consumers," said Valerie Oswalt, executive vice president and president, Campbell Snacks.
Utz Everything Daisies Pretzels will launch this fall.
The new flavor profile will be added to the company's
lineup of Utz Daisies Sourdough Pretzels.
Traditionally wheat flour has been the dominant
ingredient and organic, and even hemp-based deriva-
tives have been around for a while. Recently, alternative
flours have been developed, and gluten-free pretzels
have established a strong foothold in the market.
"We continue to see a lot of growth in the pretzel
category in gluten-free, grain-free, and other free-from
segments," said Greg Pearson, chief executive officer,
Pretzels, Inc., Bluffton, Ind.
Larger package sizes were in demand during the
initial months of the pandemic due to stay-at-home
limitations.
Consumers may continue to purchase in bulk as a
way to economize and get more value.
"We see the trend away from single-serve packages
as a short-term blip related to stay-at-home orders,"
Mr. Pearson said. "As the country opens up, many of
the factors driving that trend will return. It will always be
important for producers to have a balanced approach
with multiple packaging sizes to serve customers."
