These are not normal times.
The anticipated short term "hunkering
down" has grown into a six-month (and
counting) period of evolving directives to #stayathome, #wearamask,
#socialdistance. In addition to this
time of imposed social isolation to
control the spread of COVID-19,
the conversation of the profound
impact of racism in this country has
been reignited.
Since March, SNAC International's
days have been filled with postponing,
reimagining and launching new programs
to ensure that we are doing our part to be an
indispensable resource to our member companies
as they navigate these choppy waters. You will read
the details in David Walsh's article. We were gratified in the early weeks of the lockdown, when one
company executive thanked the SNAC team for
providing answers to their questions with practical
guidance before they had even asked! Equally, we
have been proud of the grit and the passion the
snack workforce has demonstrated to ensure consumers' favorite products are restocked to provide
a sense of normalcy and delight a snack can offer
when everything else is so uncertain.
We have ramped up our use of technology
to bring people together and to move in-person education online. Meeting with members of
Congress while they sit in their kitchen or backyard
changes the tone of the conversation and reminds
us that we are all part of the same community.
Interviewing thoughtful leaders on gender diversity
via Zoom, under the umbrella of WinS (Women in
Snacks), removes the cap on the number of people who can participate by not requiring in-person
attendance. And, our latest initiative, SNAC Cast,
allows subscribers of our podcast the chance to
really get to know the industry leaders and trend
setters as they share personal details about their
career journeys.
While we long for the day when we can be together again in person, I am personally energized
by the opportunities we have to use our platforms
to create a more inclusive industry and society.
SNAC's mission - connecting the industry to create growth and opportunity - lights the path.
I am reminded that this strange trip has many
benefits. In the meantime, we will keep on truckin'.
