BROADENING THE DEFINITION OF Consumers look
outside conventional
categories to find
BFY snack options.
As the stress of the pandemic became the new normal,
consumers started to clean up their snacking or
turn to other categories to satiate cravings.
The twin trends of a need for variety and healthy snack
alternatives explain why the apple chip category saw 18.2%
growth in dollar sales, according to IRI data for the 52 weeks
ending May 16, 2021. The major winners in this category
were Bare, Seneca and Greenetown Foods, which all experienced
double-digit dollar sales growth as well.
While apple chips saw double-digit growth, the entire
category of Other Snacks remained fairly flat, with chocolate-covered
salted snacks experiencing a modest 2.9%
increase in dollar sales and carob- and yogurt-coated
snacks seeing 6.5% dollar growth. Unit sales across the
entire category, however, were down 4.1%, despite apple
chips gaining 13.6% growth in unit sales. Much of the
losses or flatness in this category can be attributed to
double-digit losses felt by smaller companies.
With apple chips and carob- and yogurt-coated snacks
carrying the Other Snacks category, it's clear that consumers
were driven by their need for snacks they considered
healthier than traditional.

CATEGORY INNOVATIONS
Chips made from fruits did well during the pandemic, a
sign of consumers' move back toward healthy snacking once
it was clear that stay-at-home orders would endure.
Yogurt-coated snacks and other treats made with yogurt
experienced strong growth. These products often contain
healthy whole food ingredients like fruit, complementing the
better-for-you coating of yogurt.
