Plant-based claims benefit the Nuts and Seeds category.
Nothing says all natural more than a snack that
was picked from a plant. With post-pandemic
health-consciousness and a consumer desire
to see environmental friendliness and sustainability
at the top of every company's agenda,
it's no wonder that nut sales increased for the
52 weeks ending May 16, 2021. Sunflower and
pumpkin seed dollar sales were up 3.7% altogether,
and that can likely be attributed to the
increase of plant-based claims in 2020.
Plant-based product launches nearly doubled
from 2019 to 2020, said Tom Vierhile, vice president
of strategic insights North America, Innova Market
Insights, increasing just over 89% during that period.
" The hot category there was 'Snack Nuts and
Seeds,' which saw plant-based launches rise over
400%, " he said.
Though the snack simply comes from the
earth, brands are ensuring Nuts and Seeds don't
become plain or boring. This category is seeing
flavor-packed versions stocking the shelves, with
a popular focus on heat, including Takis Hot Nuts
and Blue Diamond's new Ghost Pepper Xtremes. It
turns out most any flavor goes with nuts, from barbecue
to cheddar cheese or cinnamon churro.

CATEGORY INNOVATIONS
As with every other snack category, consumers are
demanding that brands bring the heat. Takis offers a variety
of Hot Nuts flavors, and Blue Diamond has challenged
consumers' limits with Xtremes, such as Ghost Pepper.
Clif Bar has taken the effort of scooping up individual nuts
and seeds and crafting them into clusters. The brand makes
the snack salty and savory with rich flavors.
Nuts sometimes go in desserts, and sometimes they're
tossed in salads. Brands like Diamond are proving the
flexibility of the snack by coating nuts with sweet flavors, like
Dark Chocolate or Cinnamon Churro; spicy flavors, like Chile
Lime; and salty flavors, like Teriyaki and Wasabi.
