Consumers seek innovative Cheese
Snacks in the wake of pandemic trends.

There is no doubt consumers turned to comfort
snacks over the course of the pandemic, and
that made Cheese Snacks a priority. The classic
favorites, such as Cheetos and Utz Cheese
Balls, remained fairly consistent in sales compared
to the previous year, while sales of other
brands such as Munch King and Circus Time
skyrocketed.
Parmcrisps, a keto-friendly cheese snack brand,
saw a huge increase in volume sales of 58.8%
over the 52 weeks ending May 16, 2021. Another
keto-friendly snack that rose by 24.9% volume
sales is Whisps, a cheese crisp that not only offers
a wide variety of flavors, from Hot & Spicy to
Tomato Basil, but also is gluten-free with as little as
0 grams of sugar.This consumer desire for low-carb,
health-conscious snacks is an indicator of the better-for-you
mindset of pandemic snacking.
Meanwhile, Cheez-It Snap'd saw a volume increase
of 38% over the same period, suggesting
that consumers are looking for new or adventurous
formats of familiar, reliable snacks. One exception is
puffed products, which remain as popular as always
through heavy flavor application, such as Blazin' Hot
from Turkey Creek Snacks.
A brand that took a huge hit in the cheese snack
category for this period was Planters, which may
reflect a lack of innovation as the brand offered only
its classic Cheez Curls and Cheez Balls.
The recent release of new flavors will likely help
Planters, acquired this year by Hormel Foods, to
become relevant again in this category.

CATEGORY INNOVATIONS
The call for new products in the cheese category is
leading to the expansion of flavors with added heat, like
Whisps' Hot & Spicy and Turkey Creek's Blazin' Hot.
New formats of familiar snacks like with Ritz Cheese
Crispers or Cheez-It Snap'd can provide adventure without
risk for consumers..
Cheese is still cheese, even with other ingredients stacked
on top, and consumers are enjoying the blending of flavors.
Planters hopped on board by adding Jalapeño Cheddar,
Blazin' Hot and Nacho Cheez to its classic Cheez Balls
snack.
