environmentally friendly
ingredients.

The lack of freedom to travel over the past year
proved that jerky is not just confined to road trip cravings.
Many top dried meat snack brands such as Slim
Jim, Jack Link's and Old Wisconsin saw fair increases
in dollar sales in the 52 weeks ending May 16 of this
year, with increases ranging from 20% to 35%. Meat
snacks are not restricting themselves to meat or the
Meat Snacks category, either. Slim Jim has branched
out from jerky, adding a new potato snack Fire Fries
to its brand, which contain no meat at all. Jack Link's
has created the Cold Crafted Linkwich, a breadless
sandwich made of salami and various cheeses.
As with most of the food industry, meat snack companies
are touting their environmental friendliness. Brands
like Carnivore Snax are pushing beyond grass-fed
beef and achieving regenerative agriculture with herd
movements that reverse soil erosion and store carbon.
Patagonia even got in on the movement with its Patagonia
Provisions brand of buffalo jerky made from free-roaming
Great Plains buffalo. It seems sustainable sourcing and
simplifying ingredient lists will remain at the forefront of the
Meat Snacks category for the foreseeable future.

When it comes to jerky, many consumers just want the
meat. " The simpler the better " is a motto brands can go by
when advertising zero sugar and no added ingredients.
Cheese and jerky go together like pit stops and road trips,
and many brands are hopping on the bandwagon. Wenzel's
Bacon Cheddar Sticks blend the two ingredients into a single
stick, while Jack Link's Cold Crafted Linkwich allows the
ingredients to sit in layers, like a breadless sandwich.
