demand increase for filled pretzels as they

The constant back and forth between health and
taste for consumers has spurred innovation. Three
out of four consumers look for snacks that are both
healthy and taste great, but few (39%) are willing
to sacrifice taste for healthier options, according to
research and analysis commissioned by Yasso, Inc.
and independently conducted and written by Mintel
Consulting, in collaboration with IRI.
The permissible indulgence has emerged permitting
consumers to have their cake and eat it, too.
According to Mintel research, 78% of consumers
believe snacking can be part of a healthy diet and
69% want snacks that balance health and taste.
Health and diet trends, like dairy-free, plant-based,
keto and vegan are driving the permissible indulgence
space with consumers seeking out better
snack choices they can enjoy guilt-free.
" Consumers want to feel good about their snacks,
and they want it to be worth it, " Ms. Oswalt said.
" Permissible with no taste trade-offs. The convergence
of better-made/better-for-you and indulgence
was already progressing without COVID, but it has
been super-charged with consumers seeking savory
snacks that are bold and crave-able without guilt. "
The plant-based trend continues to thrive and
influence snack innovation. Producers would do well
to combine premium ingredients or indulgent claims
with plant-based products for a winning combination,
which resulted in 103% growth when comparing
sweet and snack launches between November
2019 and October 2020 vs. November 2020 and
October 2021, according to Innova Market Insights'
new product database.
