Tortilla Chips innovate with
new varieties, BFY options.

Any walk down the tortilla chip aisle at the supermarket
will reveal plenty of exciting new flavors
keeping the category fresh.
Popular flavors like Nacho Cheese, Chili and Lime
still reign supreme, but tortilla chip makers have
also introduced unique options like Guacamole,
Fajitas and Salsa Verde. Spicy chip offerings are
red-hot as well, including Tostitos' new Habañero
tortilla chips and Takis' unique Blue Heat chips.
New flavors are everywhere, and there are plenty
of better-for-you options to go with them, including
gluten-free, keto-friendly and grain-free chips. Siete
Family Foods, which posted 69.9% growth in 2021
according to IRI, and Thrive Market offer chips
made from cassava and coconut flour.
" We see products with ancillary benefits such
as protein-packed, plant-based and even a mixture
of textures and unexpected flavors, " said Bill
Blubaugh, senior vice president, marketing and
communications, Utz Brands, Inc., whose On The
Border chips grew 5.7%. " With such strong consumer
demand for snacks, there's a significant opportunity
to leverage from the innovation space. "
Overall, the Tortilla Chip category grew 1.5%,
according to IRI data for the 52 weeks ending Dec.
26, 2021. Frito-Lay's staple brands Doritos and
Tostitos led the way in sales, but plenty of other
brands are picking up steam as well. Barcel USA's
popular Takis Fuego tortilla chips rose to fourth in
the category with 13.9% growth, and its parent
company Barcel Takis jumped 259.7%. Other
brands like Late July, Juanitas and Sabritas also
saw double-digit growth.

CATEGORY INNOVATIONS
 Hot chips are here to stay, and big names are expanding
the spicy space. Tostitos introduced a new Habañero
flavor in 2021, as did Tia Lupita.
 Plant- and vegetable-based tortilla chips are an area of
growth, including Siete Family Food's Thrive Market's grainfree
tortilla chips made with cassava and coconut flour.
 Chicas and Cazo De Oro brands from Benestar Brands
speak to a need for authentic products with both simple
ingredients and processes.
