Snack Bars build momentum with
nutritional health claims.

Snack bars took a hit during the early stages of
the coronavirus (COVID-19) pandemic but have
bounced back as consumers return to regular
activities and on-the-go snacking.
" Mobility absolutely helped the bar category, "
said Sally Lyons Wyatt, executive vice president
for client insights, IRI. " Bars are in a winning situation
because 2020 was a down year. The momentum
is there, and they're bringing innovation
that's refreshing the shelf. "
Dollar sales of all Snack Bars increased 9.1% for
the 52 weeks ending Dec. 26, 2021, according to
IRI, while Nutritional/Intrinsic Health Value Bars rose
7.1% and Breakfast and Cereal Bars jumped 20.2%.
Granola Bars posted minimal growth at 0.8%.
Brands performing well include Clif Bar, which
posted 11.9% growth, and Quest Nutrition, which
grew 29.1%.
These bars and others have capitalized on growing
consumer demand for bars with functional health
benefits. Consumers are more healthconscious,
especially since the pandemic, and claims
like low sugar, gluten-free and high fiber have exploded
in popularity as a result. " No added sugar " is the
fastest-growing claim within Cereal and Energy bar
launches, according to Innova Market Insights.
Quest's successful line of nutrition bars, for example,
contain only 1 gram of sugar and 4 grams of
net carbs while offering 21 grams of protein.

carbs and sugar makes us unique and promotes
dietary health and wellness in every bite " said

CATEGORY INNOVATIONS
Bars emphasizing gut health are a growing trend in the
category. BelliWelli offers a low-FODMAP bar with pre- and
probiotics that aid in digestive health.
Savory bars are attempting to carve out a space in the
sweet-dominated category. Undressed salad bars are made
with superfoods like spinach and kale and come in Berry
Balsamic, Spicy Southwest and Miso Ginger.
Allergen-free and allergen-friendly snack bar options
have grown. Blake's Seed Based bars are free of the top
eight food allergens, including peanuts, tree nuts, wheat,
soy, effs, dairy, fish and shellfish.
" No added sugar " is the fastest growing claim within
Cereal and Energy bar launches. B.T.R. bars are sweetened
with monk fruit and contain 90% less sugar than the average
protein bar.
