Popcorn provides the perfect format for snacking throughout the day.
Sales of ready-to-eat (RTE) popcorn popped once
again, rising 7.8% to $1.48 billion, even as many
movie theaters, sporting events and life in general reopened
over the past year. Maybe that's because popcorn
is perceived as a snack that's lighter in calories,
which allows consumers to binge during their favorite
Netflix shows without blowing up their diets.
Certainly, some of the big winners are betting on
calorie-conscious consumption with SkinnyPop and
Smartfood Smart 50 boasting 50 or so calories per cup,
but who eats just a cup of popcorn? A real serving of
popcorn is 4 to 5 cups, or 120 to 250 calories, even if it is
cooked in avocado oil and seasoned with sea salt.
Meanwhile, Popcornopolis, Cretors and Herr's saw
their sales jump double digits, according to IRI. Likewise,
many smaller brands have emerged over the years as the
barrier-to-entry in this snack category appears to be lower
than others because popcorn is found both in the salted
snack and the natural food aisles in most retail stores.
Popcorn competes against all types of sweet, savory,
flaming hot and gourmet snacks. Perhaps the biggest
splash in recent years was when PepsiCo came out with
Cheetos Popcorn, which brought the seasoning of the
iconic cheese snack to the category and became one of
IRI's top New Product Pacesetters in 2020. It also combined
the two snacks in its Cheetos Crunch Pop Mix.
So how much popcorn do Americans eat?
According to the Popcorn Board, US consumers
scarf down about 15 billion quarts annually. That's
about 45 quarts - or 180 cups - per person, or
about 400 to 800 handfuls a year, depending on
who's consuming it.

Popcorn is now vying with candy and other snacks for
a share of the sweet tooth market with flavors ranging from
more traditional caramel and chocolate-coated to candy
cane, pumpkin spice, cranberry, gingerbread, donut and
cupcake varieties.
For weight-conscious snackers who seek permissible
indulgence, RTE popcorn offers low-calorie options as well
as affordable gluten-free, vegan, organic and other betterfor-you
varieties found in both the snack and natural foods
aisles.
Popcorn pairs well with other popular snacks from
Cheetos Crunch Pop Mix with the iconic cheese snack to
homemade mashups that include pretzels, nuts, trail mixes
and more.
Popcorn goes great with beer, but Eatable Foods is taking
it to a new level with liquor-infused popcorn like Pop the
Champagne, Whisky on the Pops, Pop Goes Sangria, Pop
the Salt & Tequila and Poppin' Rosé All Day.
