Bar manufacturers innovate in form, function and flavor.

First COVID-19 and now inflation, the Snack Bar
category has struggled in recent years to regain
its pre-2020 excitement. While sales improved in
2021 as consumers became more mobile, inflation
pressures are taking their toll.
IRI data for the 52 weeks ending Jan. 8 show a
category experiencing double-digit gains in dollar
sales but dips in unit sales. Nutrition Bars have
experienced the most significant impact with dollar
sales up only 4.7% and unit sales down 15.3%.
Breakfast Bars sit at a 14.7% increase in dollar
sales and a 3.1% decrease in unit sales, and
Granola Bars have seen a 12.2% increase in dollar
sales and a unit sales decline of 5.2%. All Other
Snack/Granola Bars/Clusters have had the best
time in the past year with 48.3% growth in dollar
sales and 16.9% growth in unit sales. This subcategory,
however, only represents $227.4 million of a
total $6.6 billion dollar industry. The Snack Bar category
experienced a 10.3% increase in dollar sales
and a decline of 8.3% in unit sales.
General Mill's Nature Valley brand pivoted away
from its traditional crunchy bar to launch its Soft
Baked Muffin Bar and Wafer Bars. The brand put
a new spin on the crunch with Crunchy Dipped
Granola Squares in indulgent flavors, including Salted
Caramel, Chocolate and Peanut Butter Chocolate.
Nutrition Bar leader Clif Bar has brought together
favorite flavors in its new Duos line as well
as its Lunabar Mashups. The Duos line brings
together two classic flavors, such as Cool Mint
Chocolate and Chocolate Chip, into a smaller bar.
Lunabar Mashups offer a new spin on the classic
Lemon Zest flavor with LemonZest + Coconut and
LemonZest + Raspberry varieties.
In addition to flavor mashups and new formats,
functional food continues to drive snack bar innovation
as bar companies hope to overcome consumers'
pinched wallets by giving them their money's
worth in nutrition. RxBar continues to find success
with its simple ingredient deck and a new plantbased
protein line. Clif Bar appeals to parents and
children through its Clif Kid Z Bar boasting 12 grams
of whole grains and a good source of fiber claim.

The bar category struggled against rising prices
in 2022 with falling unit sales balancing rising dollar
sales.
Innovation in the bar category included new mashup
flavors, functional ingredients and new formats for
familiar brands.
Today's bars boast high protein and fiber with low
sugar to give consumers their money's worth in the
midst of rising prices.
Nature Valley expanded beyond its traditional
crunchy bar into Soft Baked Muffin Bars and Wafer Bars.
