Cargill, Arasco plan joint venture in Saudi Arabia
COBHAM, ENGLAND — Cargill and Arasco announced on Jan.
23 the companies’ intention to create a new starches and sweeteners
joint venture in Saudi Arabia. The new joint venture company will
acquire Arasco’s existing corn milling facility in Al Kharj and will
produce starch-based products primarily for the Gulf Cooperation
Council (GCC) countries of Saudi Arabia, UAE, Kuwait, Oman, Qatar, Bahrain, as well as Yemen, Iraq and Jordan.
This joint venture will mark Cargill’s first operations in the country and will build on Cargill’s global capabilities in food ingredients
and Arasco’s already proven successful local knowledge and supply
chain infrastructure.
Speaking about the importance of this new geography and growing industry, Frank van Lierde, executive vice-president, Cargill
said, “The Middle East region represents the highest growth area for
the food and drink industry in the world. The rapidly changing demographics in the region and the growth of consumer choice means that
this joint venture will be well placed to help our customers meet this
rapidly developing market.
“By partnering with Arasco and combining the strengths of both
our companies, this joint venture will not only help us create enhanced
solutions for our customers but most importantly local solutions.”
The intent is to triple production at the Al Kharj plant to meet the
growing demand across the confectionery, juice, bakery and catering
segments in the region.
Glucose and starch production capacities will more than double
and the product offering will be expanded to include high fructose
corn syrup (HFCS) to serve the growing food and beverage industry
in Saudi Arabia.
“This is an exciting opportunity for both companies to offer our
customers — new or existing — a broader portfolio of products and
solutions,” said Dr. Abdulmalik Alhusseini, chief executive officer,
Arasco. “Through this joint venture, we can expand our facilities
more quickly and launch new products, such as HFCS to Saudi Arabia. We are looking forward to working with Cargill to build and
strengthen our existing successful corn milling operations.”
Going forward, the joint venture will also pave the way for discovering further opportunities for growth in the region and to support
customers with other food ingredient solutions. The joint venture has
potential for further expansion in line with customer demand.
Once the agreement is finalized, Cargill will take a 20% stake in
the joint venture, while Arasco will take an 80% stake and management control. The agreement is subject to regulatory approvals.
Cargill completes purchase agreement for Pennfield Corp.
MINNEAPOLIS, MINNESOTA, U.S. — Cargill announced on Jan.
17 that it has secured the winning bid to complete the acquisition
of two animal feed mills from Lancaster, Pennsylvania, U.S.-based
Pennfield Corp. for $9.8 million in a bankruptcy proceeding.
Under terms of the agreement, Cargill acquired Pennfield’s animal
feed mills and associated assets located in Mount Joy and Martinsburg, Pennsylvania, U.S. To facilitate the sale of its assets, Pennfield
filed voluntary Chapter 11 Bankruptcy petitions in U.S. Bankruptcy
court for the Eastern District of Pennsylvania in October 2012.
Cargill’s preliminary bid was filed with the bankruptcy court on
Dec. 28, 2012. The judge then set a court date of Jan. 17, to allow for
a simultaneous live auction of other bids received during the interim
time frame and a confirmation of the ultimate bid which would provide the best combination of fit and value for the secured creditors in
the bankruptcy estate.
“We are thrilled to add Pennfield’s state-of-the-art facilities and
knowledgeable employees to the Cargill family,” said Rob Sheffer,
group director for Cargill’s Northeast region. “The deal not only expands our footprint in the region but it also provides us with additional capabilities and opportunities to serve new customer segments
and enhance our offerings for existing customers in the region.”
Jennifer Horn, former director of administration and family member of Pennfield, will join Cargill as administration team lead, where
she will be responsible for overseeing Pennfield customer and employee communications.
“We believe the employees and customers of Pennfield could not
have received a better outcome than being part of the Cargill family,”
Horn said. “Cargill is not only a market leader but also a familyowned organization that shares the same values and commitment to
providing the best products for our customers.”
Last day for open outcry trading at KCBT is July 28
CHICAGO, ILLINOIS, U.S. — CME Group on Feb. 4 announced it will
transition open outcry trading of Kansas City Board of Trade (KCBT)
hard red winter (HRW) wheat futures and options to its Chicago trading floor beginning July 1, 2013, pending CFTC review. CME said this
transition will accelerate efficiencies and trading opportunities for customers trading both the HRW wheat and CBOT Soft Red Winter (SRW)
wheat varieties. KCBT wheat futures and options will continue to trade
on CME Globex and be listed by and subject to the rules of KCBT.
The last day of open outcry trading on the KCBT floor will be June
28. CME Group will operate an electronic trading center in the former KCBT floor space until the end of September, providing a place
for Kansas City-based traders to execute trades on CME Globex.
“Throughout the integration process, we’ve remained focused on
our customers who manage global price risk associated with these
two classes of wheat,” said CME Group COO Bryan Durkin. “By
moving Kansas City wheat to the Chicago floor later this year, we
20
will make it as efficient as possible for our customers to trade both
products and the spread between the two.”
In addition, beginning April 15, subject to CFTC approval, customers will benefit from the integration of KCBT clearing services
into CME Clearing, which will provide cross-margining and other
capital efficiencies for market participants.
KCBT on Oct. 17, 2012 announced plans to sell to CME Group
for $126 million in cash. At that time, CME, which owns the Chicago
Mercantile Exchange, Chicago Board of Trade and New York Mercantile Exchange, pledged to keep the historic KCBT trading floor
open for at least six months. It also will keep a committee of KCBT
market participants for at least three years to advise on hard red winter wheat contract terms and conditions.
The acquisition gives CME Group control over the trading of all
wheat in the United States, except for hard red spring wheat, which
is traded by the Minneapolis Grain Exchange.
