Green landscapes, golfing greens, plenty of pocketbook green – they all can figure into the travel experience. A recent trend in vacation homes has people seeing green in a different way. Hot on the heels of construction breakthroughs in single-family home design, second homes, W clean break condos and resorts are taking a greener path in eco-friendly living. But what exactly constitutes a “green” home? Many factors come into play here, most approved with LEED (Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design) Certification, a benchmark for the design, building and operation of green properties developed by the United States Green Building Council. Some of these include, but are not limited to: reducing greenhouse gases, improving indoor air quality, using non-toxic insulation and reclaimed materials and utilizing renewable energy sources like solar power, wind power or hydroelectricity. While many hotels and vacation properties across the country have taken steps to improve their environmental impact, a few standouts go above and beyond to promote green practices and policies.
