EDITOR'S LETTER T DIVINE DESIGN his past month, I had the pleasure of visiting a few custom designed homes here in the South Bay. Each had a totally different vibe: one very traditional, another über contemporary, yet another totally “greened” out. On one of those occasions, an architect friend happened to engage the homeowner in a conversation about the creation of his modern abode out on the tip of the Palos Verdes Peninsula. I was fascinated by the process unfolding in their dialogue. Pointing to a tall cabinet, our host revealed collected mementos (elevations, models, a hardhat) from a building experience that took six years from concept to completion. As I gazed out at the setting sun over the Pacific, perfectly framed by the large windows fronting the stunning view, I didn’t hesitate forming a conclusion about the process. Was it all worth it? Absolutely. The South Bay is rich in home design, from the architect’s vision to the interior designer’s finishing touches. In this issue, we celebrate their mastery. Architect Tony Ashai welcomes us into the home he designed and built for himself, a magnificent Tuscan-inspired villa that appears plucked right out of the Italian countryside. Four of our favorite interior designers share their favorite rooms in local homes, each a reflection of their signature style. In our Real Estate section, we check in with Worklofts, Inc. partners Nick Schaar and Bryn Stroyke and their creative commercial projects. Lastly, Publisher Todd Klawin sat down for a round table discussion with four of the South Bay’s leading architects and designers who shared their thoughts on the state of design in the South Bay and the trends impacting their projects, their clients and their communities. As always, we bring you plenty of reasons to get out of the house and play, including a yachting adventure though the fashionable waters of the Côte d’Azur, and a local getaway to Napa to sample some of their delicious wines. Three new luxury sedans await your test drive, not to mention plenty of summer fashions and accessories poised to heat up your wardrobe. And, don’t forget to check out all the exciting events coming to our community in the next couple months. Summer’s upon us…make the most of it! • Darren Elms 8 Luxury Life & Style May/June 2008 Photo by Bradford Rogne, bradfordrogne.com.
