THE MOORES' MANHATTAN BEACH OASIS Coul by Marlene Stang d a small piece of Thoreau’s Walden Pond really exist in Southern California? This is the question I asked myself as I prepared to visit the Manhattan Beach home of Jim and Anna Moore. Perhaps as a result of my mother telling me bedtime stories about the Golden Door Spa in Escondido when I was a small child, the very idea of building a suburban home that successfully evokes a retreat ensconced in nature seemed, to me, almost too ideal to be true. Steve Lazar, designer of the Moore residence and founder of Lazar Design/Build, Inc., informed me in advance that I would encounter an environment where the boundaries between outdoor and indoor space are provocatively difficult to define. Over the course of my visit, I would see firsthand the myriad of ways in which an elemental approach to design can render a home startlingly in tune with both its residents and the natural world itself.
