THE MOORES' MANHATTAN BEACH OASIS Coul by Marlene Stang d a small piece of Thoreau’s Walden Pond really exist in Southern California? This is the question I asked myself as I prepared to visit the Manhattan Beach home of Jim and Anna Moore. Perhaps as a result of my mother telling me bedtime stories about the Golden Door Spa in Escondido when I was a small child, the very idea of building a suburban home that successfully evokes a retreat ensconced in nature seemed, to me, almost too ideal to be true.
