The Villages Public Safety Department (VPSD)
was first organized in 1998 by the Village Center
Community Development District (VCCDD)
in response to a rapidly growing community.
The Villages Public Safety Department began
as a one-station
department with
one fire chief and 12
firefighter/paramedics.
Transitioning to the
present, VPSD is now an
all-hazards department
protecting the largest
single-site residential
real estate development
and largest retirement
community in the
United States. As
of FY22-23, VPSD
is comprised of 156
Firefighters, 6 Battalion
Chiefs, and 9 Fire Stations
The Villages Public Safety Department is
responsible for protecting the lives and property
of the residents, businesses, and visitors of
The Villages in its entirety, including all areas
outside of The Villages within VPSD's response
area, as designated via interlocal and mutual aid
agreements in place.
VPSD is consistently working to achieve and
maintain the highest level of professionalism
and efficiency on behalf of those we serve, and
thus, are in a consistent state of planning in order
to maintain a level of growth and development
synonymous with the growth and expansion

to. The Villages Public Safety Department
continues to honor its community by providing
quality services through its proactive focus
on risks and deployment from eight stations
located strategically throughout over 90 square
miles of coverage and response area: this area
encompasses all of The Villages, including the
areas of Lady Lake, Fruitland Park, and Leesburg.
In addition, the local area has thousands of
visitors and many others that are employed
within the community.
Presently, VPSD is ultimately responsible

for the lives and well-being of nearly 150,000
residents, and the preservation of more than $3
billion dollars' worth of commercial property/
infrastructure, and over 70,000 residential
rooftops.
