If you did, then you’re now in the know about some unexpected information in the commercial-retail sector that Associate Editor Lee Schaller came across during her research. No, I will not reveal it here. You’ll have to pay us a visit at www.buildingindustryhawaii.com to find out what it is (or wait for the commercial-retail cover story that Lee is writing for the February issue). You see, a drawback of being a monthly publication is that much of what might be deemed breaking news often no longer is by the time this magazine is printed — although we do, periodically, still manage to scoop other news agencies. The Internet, with its nearly limitless capacity, is an ideal remedy. We can regularly post news items that may or may not find their way to print. For example, you will have to wait until the printed February issue to learn the final year-to-date totals in Contracts Awarded (because this is being written during the Christmas rush). However, if you visit Building Industry online this month, you can probably get the information sooner. Regardless of the state of the economy, knowledge is power. As your industry partner, we pledge to use all the resources we have on hand to keep you informed and at the top of your game. team player In the meantime, let’s not forget one of the industry’s strongest partners is the military. Much of the work that has carried us through in these difficult times have been federal jobs. Lee Schaller’s extensively researched Military feature, which begins on page 16, will give you the inside scoop on what to expect in 2012. Although overall forecasts for 2012 are not as optimistic as they once were – as you will see when you receive our annual Construction Preview later this month – it is a “New Year,” unwritten and alive with possibilities. “Expect the best, plan for the worst, and prepare to be surprised.” — Denis Waitley, an American motivational speaker With Much Aloha, Judith Shinsato http://www.buildingindustryhawaii.com http://www.aiahonolulu.org http://www.biahawaii.org http://www.gcahawaii.org http://www.nawic-honolulu.org
