The Hot Spot Hyatt Regency Waikiki Beach Resort and Spa has just completed a $13 million renovation to reposition itself for a new generation of travelers while preserving its historic character, charm and aloha spirit. To perform the makeover of this iconic property, Hyatt Regency Waikiki selected dck pacific construction, LLC, a dck worldwide company. The resort-wide project includes the complete renovation of the property’s entire third floor public areas and the introduction of two new restaurants, SHOR and Japengo; a new poolside lounge and bar, SWIM; a significantly upgraded pool deck; and an entirely new Regency Club product. “dck pacific construction has always done hospitality renovation work and has always strived to perform the best quality of work. Over the years, we (dck and our subcontractors) have accumulated a lot of experience and knowledge in dealing with renovation work,” says Eric Tessem, senior vice president and general manager of dck pacific construction. “The most gratifying part of doing this renovation work at a hotel is the feeling at the end of the project when everyone compliments on how well it looks.” Roy Yamagishi, project manager for dck pacific construction, describes various facets of the project starting with the alterations to Hyatt Regency Waikiki’s third floor, which is a hot spot for dining and socializing and draws a crowd of fashion-forward kamaaina, cosmopolitan travelers and hip, young adults from all over the island. “The scope of work for the third floor was the demolition of the old Musashi Restaurant, Terrace Grill, pool deck, pool, spa and pool bar. The old Musashi Restaurant became the new Regency Club, Terrace Grill became the new SHOR Restaurant, the elegant dive pool bar was relocated and is now named SWIM.” Work on the third floor lasted from Jan. 3, 2011, to Oct. 10, 2011. “Some special features are the outside of the old Musashi Restaurant, which was a Japanese garden,” says Yamagishi. “This garden was removed to make a terrace for the Regency Club where guests can go to enjoy the view of 62 | Building industry | JANUARY 2012 Waikiki and sit around two fire bowls. The sunset from the Regency Club terrace is absolutely beautiful.” Yamagishi adds, “Another special feature is the sneeze guard over the cold buffet. The sneeze guard was very large and custom designed.” Work on Japengo, Hyatt Regency Waikiki’s newest restaurant, lasted from June 5, 2011, to Oct. 4, 2011. The construction of the chic restaurant, which features innovative cocktails, expertly rolled sushi and a menu of authentic ethnic flavors from the Pacific Rim and South East Asia, required dck to knock down the space occupied by one of Waikiki’s most popular restaurants. “The scope of work for Japengo was the complete demolition of the old Ciao Mein Restaurant,” says Yamagishi. “Construction included new wood flooring, wall cladding, wood slat ceilings, seating area, sushi bar and a private dining area.” “A special feature of Japengo is the ceramic wall cladding, which is made from recycled materials,” he says.
