NewsBeat CAK Annual Meeting Highlights Service The Contractors Association of Kauai (CAK) hosted its 54th annual meeting and installation dinner on Dec. 1 at the Kauai Marriott Resort. Besides inducting its 2012 officers, the event also recognizes specific members for their service to the association as well as the community as whole. The new officers – who were installed by Judge Laurel Loo – include: • President: Maile Bryan, Martin A. Bryan, Inc. • First Vice-President: Jerry Nishek, Kauai Nursery and Landscaping • Second Vice-President: Travis Horka, Custom Landscaping and Maintenance • Secretary: Jesse Akagi, The Gas Company • Treasurer: Dirk Apao, Finance Factors The following directors also were elected: Tom Arnott of Jas. W. Glover; Bryan Davidson of Earthworks Pacific; Fred Pascual of Kauai Island Utility Cooperative; Susan Chandler of RSI/Rosa’s Supply; David Hinazumi of Grove Farm Company; Lanell Miyamoto of Kalei’s Steelworks; Trinette Kaui of A&B Properties; Laura Cushnie of Cushnie Construction; Keith Suga of Goodfellow Bros.; and Matt Taba of Taba Realty & Development. Five member companies were recognized for their respective contributions to CAK, the construction industry, and the community. The association honors the memory of some of its charter members or long standing members by naming these service awards for them. They include: • Tetsuro “Rosy” Maeda Member of the Year award, presented to Sandi Kato-Klutke and the Aston Islanderon-the-Beach • Kenneth S. Shioi General Contractor of the Year award, presented by Conrad Murashige, president of Shioi Construction, to Briant Construction. • Hideo Tanaka Subcontractor of the Year award, presented to Kalei Gardner and Lanell Miyamoto of Kalei’s Steelworks • President’s Award, presented to Custom Landscaping and Maintenance. • Robert Rask Spirit of CAK award for community service, presented to Kauai Island Utility Cooperative (KIUC), whose president and CEO, David Bissell was the keynote speaker for the evening. In addition, CAK members and guests traditionally donate canned goods at membership meetings, which in turn are donated to the Salvation Army, Hanapepe Corp., for the soup kitchen and pantry. More than 1,000 pounds of canned goods were donated in 2011. The redesigned rooms are intended to introduce a new sense of Hawaiian luxury, according to the property. Begun on Sept. 12, 2011, the room renewal was designed by Philpotts Interiors, incorporating Hawaiian colors, textiles and prints, including artwork, drapery, walls painted in warm hues and new tropical furnishings. The project, performed by Summa Hawaii, also included the installation of wireless Internet throughout every guest room. “The additions to our guest rooms have allowed for an enhanced experience for our visitors,” states Tetsuji Yamazaki, general Manager of the Sheraton Maui.
