r ooFing c ontrActorS A SS top rooFing AwA The Roofing Contractors Association of Hawaii (RCAH) held its Top Roofing Awards Banquet on Jan. 25 at Waikiki's Hale Koa Hotel to honor the nominees and winners of its Top Roofing Awards for 2013. This is the second year that the RCAH has sponsored the Awards, created to recognize some of the more notable roofing jobs completed around the state. This year's nominations were almost four times the number of the previous year, making judging even more of a challenge. The diverse judging committee included Mike Hogan, Hawaii-Western Management Group, Inc.; Kevin McCallum, Cool Roof Hawaii; William Nagle, Attorney at Law; Barry Redmayne, Trade Publishing; Jim Reinhardt, AIA Architectural Diagnostics; Howard Wiig, Department of Business, Economic Development & Tourism; and Tim Lyons, Roofing Contractors Association of Hawaii. Gold Sponsors for this year's event included Jack Miller, ABC Supply; Dennis Payne, Allied Building Products; Elelani Madden, Malarkey; and Howard Meechan, Polyglass USA. Committee members for the Awards include chair Charlie Beeck, Tropical Roofing and Raingutters Inc.; Rick Samorano, Roofworks Hawaii, Inc.; Howard Meechan, Polyglass USA; Dennis Payne, Allied Building Products; Steve Maero, Rainbow Roof Maintenance; Jack Miller, ABC Supply Co. Inc.; Dora Fong, Honolulu Roofing Company; and Dana Akasaki, Commercial Roofing & Waterproofing Hawaii, Inc. Low SLope FLuid AppLied n First Place, Commercial: Commercial Roofing & Waterproofing Hawaii, Inc. for Alii Place CRW completed the deck reroofing at Alii Place, a 25-story office building in downtown Honolulu. The difficulty of getting materials on and off the roof presented a unique challenge, as there was no roof access. A rappelling system was used to lower workers down to the corner roof access points, which could only be reached from the exterior of the building. Maintenance was a top priority for the building, so going with a system that was virtually maintenance-free was a requirement. The locations of the roofs were at all heights and can be seen from upper office levels as well as other buildings in the area, hence the need for an aesthetically pleasing solution as well. After decks were cleaned and prepared, a hybrid Hydrostop coating system was installed using foundation imbedded with fabric and covered with a finish coat. To allow the roof to self-clean and prevent sediment buildups, two coats of Hydrostop and Kymax coating were applied, in addition to new drain covers. n Second Place, Commercial: Beachside Roofing, LLC for ANdAZ Maui at Wailea This project was a "fast track" model-a LEED certified project with green roof and solar-powered lobby-and the construction drawings were 50 percent complete when Beachside began work. The team worked seven days a week to meet the deadlines. The company used a guardrail system on lowsloped roofs and 100 percent tie-off on metal roofs for safety. 26 | BUILDING INDUSTRY | FEBRUARY 2014
