Philip White Architects Standing Out From the Crowd "Our scope of work at 143 Hekili Street," explains Colin Yoshiyama, president of Constructors Hawaii, Inc., general contractor for the project, "was the building shell, including the site work." The 6,000-square-foot retail-officerestaurant space project was begun by Constructors Hawaii in April 2013 and completed in December. If you think all retail areas look pretty much alike, take another look at 143 Hekili Street. It is not huge. It is Challenges and Solutions not sprawling. It is not a cookie-cutter design. From the shaded walkways to the colorful exterior, the overall atmosphere is welcoming and inviting. "What makes the building unique," says Yoshiyama, "are the variety of finishes and textures on the exterior-Hardi siding, for example, and plaster with a raked finish-plus the colors. Interesting materials and additions include the precast columns with the exposed coral rock and the exterior sunshades." 6 | BUILDING INDUSTRY | FEBRUARY 2014 There were a few challenges inherent in the project, but pre-planning and teamwork overcame them successfully. "What made the project challenging," says Yoshiyama, "was the overall shape/layout of the building, as there are a LOT of angles. There also were challenges in framing the structure since there are high loft ceilings with no second floor. And it also was challenging working in a tight space with heavy surrounding pedestrian traffic.
