The American Council of Engineering Companies of Hawaii (ACECH) hosted its Engineering Excellence Awards banquet on Jan. 15 at the Oahu Country Club. The annual event recognizes the best in engineering performed by member companies. “These projects are representative of and are a testimony to the quality of projects that our engineers regularly produce to make Hawaii the best place for us to live,” says Douglas Lee, ACECH president. The winning projects are: ACECH Spotlights Best in Engineering NewsBeat 1 Grand Conceptor Award • SSFM International, Inc. — Submarine Drive-in Magnetic Silencing Facility, Beckoning Point, Pearl Harbor Excellence Awards • AECOM — Kuahea Street Emergency Rockfall Mitigation, Palolo Valley • Yogi Kwong Engineers LLC and Oregon Woods, Inc. — Emergency Repair of Pali Trail, Kalaupapa, Molokai 2 Honor Awards • Bowers + Kubota Consulting — Ewa Makai Middle School • Bowers + Kubota Consulting — Honoapiilani Highway Widening • Bowers + Kubota Consulting — Honouliuli Wastewater Treatment Plant New Solids Handling Facility • Coffman Engineers — Kapolei Gas Pipeline Relocation • Masa Fujioka & Associates — USS Arizona Memorial Visitor Center Replacement Value Engineering • SSFM International — SSFM International LEED EBOM (existing building operations and maintenance) Gold Certification 1. The SSFM team earned ACECH’s Grand Conceptor Award for its involvement in the design and engineering of Pearl Harbor’s new submarine magnetic silencing facility. 3. Specialized nets by Tecco and Spider, rock bolts and lashing cables are inspected by a rapelling engineer. Along with highstrength anchors, these are part of a five-layer engineered security restraint to mitigate the rockfall threat posed by a 940-ton rock mass to several Palolo Valley homes. 4. The AECOM team 5. Within six months, the project team for the emergency repair of the Pali Trail on Molokai planned, contracted, completed geotechnical investigations, installed micropiles (shown here), designed, fabricated, shipped and placed a new 50-foot long prefabricated trail bridge to Kalaupapa. The bridge is within the top 100 feet of the 2,000-foot high Kalaupapa cliff face. 6. Representatives of Yogi Kwong (left) and Oregon Woods 3 4 5 6 MARCH 2012 | BUILDING INDUSTRY | 13
