Education, Economic Zone Rising on Guam Contracts to reshape the area around the university, community college, high school and retail shops will be awarded soon The University of Guam will be the hub for the education and economic zone. BY MAR-VIC CAGURANGAN T he University of Guam in Mangilao says it will soon begin awarding contracts for two new facilities under a mega-plan to transform the institution's landscape into a 21st century campus by 2025. The Student Service Center and the Engineering Building Annex, with a combined cost of $21.7 million, are among the four priority projects identified by infrastructure planners under the UOG Physical Master Plan unveiled in 2012. The two projects are funded through a loan from the U.S. Department of Agriculture. "We hope to turn the shovel on these projects this year. We will have these new facilities, hopefully, within a year or a year and a half," says Mark Mendiola, executive director of the UOG Endowment Foundation. "We are very grateful to USDA. They have been a good partner." Also on the priority list are the Fine and Applied Arts Building and the Triton Engagement Center. A total Mark Mendiola of 21 new facilities will rise on the campus to accommodate the school's growing enrollment. During the university's 60th anniversary in 2012, the Endowment Foundation launched a five-year capital campaign to raise $30 million by 2017. The fundraising strategy involves possible tax incentives and building-naming or other forms of recognition opportunities for businesses and individuals who commit to a finan- cial support for the master plan. For example, last October the iconic UOG Field House was renamed UOG Calvo Field House in recognition of Calvo Enterprises, which pledged $3 million. Expecting Growth Founded in 1952, UOG is the only four-year U.S. land-grant institution accredited by the Senior Commission of the Western Association of Schools and Colleges in the Western Pacific. Initially the Territorial College of Guam, it was housed in Quonset huts in the village of Mongmong with 13 faculty members and an enrollment of 200 students. The institution moved to a two-story building in its current location in Mangilao in 1960. It was renamed University of Guam in 1968 and at least 18 buildings have been constructed on the 10-hectare campus www.buildingindustryhawaii.com | 51 http://www.buildingindustryhawaii.com
