HIUSA Takes Greener Path HawaiiUSA Federal Credit Union (HIUSA FCU) dedicated a new photovoltaic (PV) system for its new Pearl City branch on Feb. 28, underlining its commitment to renewable energy. GreenPath Technologies Inc., a native Hawaiian organization, was selected as the turn-key solutions provider and utilized its PV integration, contracting and turnkey resources to provide a comprehensive solution for the renewable energy needs of HIUSA FCU. “With Hawaii’s projected rising energy cost, and after our long-term review of how we could continue our legacy,” says Karl Yoneshige, CEO of HawaiiUSA, “we initiated a commitment to our members by installing a large PV system that would generate long-term savings by reducing our operating costs. By tapping into a renewable energy source, we will lead by example for our members to reduce our carbon footprints and be responsible citizens within our community.” The PV system utilizes 396 Trinasolar® solar modules covering about 8,680 square feet of the roof, providing about 93 kilowatts of electricity. It is mounted on a SunLink® racking system with a 5-degree tilt and connected to a SMA Tower® 78 kW inverter and an online data monitoring system. This PV system is estimated to generate approximately 141,302 kW hours of electricity during the first year, offsetting 30 percent of the building’s annual electricity needs from renewable energy. Since it is a not-for-profit financial institution, the organization is unable to take advantage of the current federal and state tax incentives. However, Briand Achong, president and CEO of GreenPath, arranged 100 percent financing of the system through a 20-year power purchase agreement (PPA) with Suraj Electric, LLC. “This arrangement will provide the credit union with a lower operating cost without any investment while not assuming risk of ownership, operations and replacement,” says Achong. Prad Rao, president of Suraj Electric, adds, “We are confident that all parties involved will benefit from this state-of-the-art solar PV system and take advantage of Hawaii’s year-long sunshine and the opportunity it presents.” HawaiiUSA’s new photovoltaic system was officially turned on in February. Present for the dedication were (from left): Karl Yoneshige of HawaiiUSA, Prad Rao of Suraj Electric and Charles Chacko of GreenPath Technologies. New Pervious Concrete Pavements The Environmentally Sound Solution to Wastewater Runoff By allowing rainwater to seep through it, new Pervious Concrete Pavements eliminate standing surface water and costly drainage infrastructure, control runoff and contaminates in our waterways and replenish the groundwater aquifer. Easy maintenance and cooler surfaces make it ideal for parking lots, sidewalks and golf cart paths. Pervious is normal concrete with 3/8” basalt chip aggregates and no fines (sand).
