Saddle Road Receives FHWA Award The Big Island’s Saddle Road was honored nationally by the Federal Highway Administration (FHWA) recently with an honorable mention award in its Excellence in Highway Design Biennial Awards program. The program recognizes outstanding highway transportation design projects across the nation. According to FHWA, one of the critical challenges facing highway design is providing context sensitive highway solutions that enhance safety, improve mobility, protect the environment, make effective use of limited resources, and deliver projects in a timely manner. In nominating Saddle Road, the shortest and most direct cross-island route between east and west Hawaii, FHWA noted that the project helped to remove conflicts between military training and the traveling public. The Department of the Army constructed the original one-lane road in 1942 to provide access to its NewsBeat The award-winning Saddle Road provides the most direct access between the east and west side of the Big Island. military training facilities located in the “saddle” between Mauna Loa and Mauna Kea on Hawaii Island. The FHWA, Central Federal Lands Highway Division, the Hawaii Department of Transportation and the Department of the Army have been working together to improve Saddle Road, State Route 200, with work done in phases. The first two were completed by Kiewit Pacific Co. (now called Kiewit Infrastructure West Co.) and four done by Goodfellow Bros., Inc. The final phase is currently under construction, being done by Big Island-based Road & Highway Builders. The 2010 awards were announced at the American Association of State Highway and Transportation Officials’ annual meeting in Biloxi, Miss. The Saddle Road competed in the Rural Highways division. NAWIC Attracts New Builders The Honolulu chapter of the National Association of Women in Construction (NAWIC) hosted its annual Block Kids event on Feb. 11 at Puuhale Elementary School, the school which current NAWIC president Annie Kuhlman of Miyake Concrete Accessories attended. A total of 72 students participated in the nationwide program that introduces elementary school children from grades one through six to the construction industry. It is the organization’s youngest outreach program. The students are asked to build something using only a piece of poster board, a piece of string, a sheet of tin foil and 80 Lego blocks. The students are judged not only on their structure and its originality and creativity but also use of all the material provided, their attention to detail and oral presentation. The winners were: first place: fourth grader Timoteo Sumalinog; second place: fourth grader Deven Estomago; and third place: third grader Tasha Broniola.
