A Lesson for the Ages Noted Roman statesman and philosopher Seneca is quoted as saying, “The point is not how long you live, but how nobly you live.” In this respect, we all can take a cue from Japan. As of this writing, it’s been four days since an 9.0 magnitude earthquake struck one of Asia’s richest industrialized countries, causing untold tragedy and destruction from which it will surely still be recovering as you read this today. While watching videos, reading the many news stories, perusing the pictures, it’s hard not to ask, “How do you even begin to put the pieces back into place? Where do you start?” The people of Japan began by assisting each other when help was slow to arrive, especially in many remote towns. No rioting. No looting. No violence. It’s amazing really, and likely due partially to the country’s roots in Confucianism and Bushido code of conduct. And by now, I’m sure that rebuilding efforts are well under way. To those of you who have lost loved ones in the disaster, we here at Trade Publishing share in your sorrow and send you our most heartfelt condolences. There’s also no doubt that Hawaii, with its close-knit ties to the country, will feel the sting more sharply. At this point, only time will tell. Let us hope, though, that no matter what happens, we are able to draw upon our own home-grown Aloha spirit and face the new challenges (and opportunities) with the same grace and honor Japan has shown.
