NewsBeat BIA Show Generates Record Crowd Building Industry Association of Hawaii (BIA-Hawaii) held its 17th annual BIA Home Building & Remodeling Show Jan. 28-30 at the Neal Blaisdell Exhibition Hall. According to the association, the event generated 22,655 attendees, which is a 13 percent increase over the 2010 show and the third largest attendance in the 17-year history of this signature BIA-Hawaii event. Silver Sponsor BIA-Hawaii Remodelers presented Hawaii’s top contractors, suppliers, building industry experts and associates. The daily seminars conducted by award winning designers and industry experts drew hundreds of interested consumers. The most popular exhibitors featured photovoltaic solar panels, windows, kitchen and bathroom renovation contractors and sustainable materials that offered low maintenance and energy savings to homeowners. The top sustainable and energy-efficient material categories were flooring, cabinets, countertops and roofing. Consumer attendees were focused, brought lists, took notes and asked the exhibitors specific questions. “We are thrilled with the tremendous public response and our exhibitors are very excited to start 2011 with this level of interest and leads from the commercial and residential markets,” says Karen Nakamura, BIA-Hawaii CEO. “For many people, their home is their most valuable asset and we are proud to provide ‘The Big Show’ array of products and services under one roof. Consumers used our guidebooks to find specific vendors, obtain information, costing and availability of products and services.” The event also gave an update on BIA-Hawaii’s “New Hawaiian Home.” The program’s goals are to promote sustainable building and sustainable living in Hawaii and offer green education to smaller contractors throughout the islands. BIA-Hawaii says, “Currently, there is a glass ceiling for contractors trying to get into sustainable, green building. This is especially true for smaller contractors, which is the primary target for the BIA. There is a perception that sustainable, green building is inefficient, cost prohibitive and too difficult. The New Hawaiian Home will serve as a learning tool for BIA contractors and prospective contractors to better understand green building concepts.” Above, Kahu Kordell Kokea, 2011 BIA President Jim Byxbee and 2011 HBRS Chair Dan Barnett Below, BIA-Hawaii says its New Hawaiian Home is “a sustainable model for green living now, and into the future.” AIA EVP Earns National Award Amy Blagriff, executive vice president of the American Institute of Architects, Honolulu chapter (AIA Honolulu), received AIA’s National Service Award in February. In addition to serving as one of only 10 members on the AIA national executive committee, Blagriff was recognized for her years of commitment to the architectural profession and its members as well as her dedication to design issues in the community. She also was honored for providing “guidance with her gifts of time, knowledge, and support … as an admired partner and a healing force for collaboration.” The award was presented at the 2011 AIA Grassroots Leadership & Legislative Conference in Washington, D.C.
